In Africa and the Amazon, lip plates are placed into a young woman’s pierced hole in the upper and/or lower lip soon after she reaches puberty. Much like in Thailand, larger modifications signify economic and social strength. Though this tradition is practiced in two quite separate places, researchers have found that these labrets were independently invented.
In the Amazon room, there will be a glass case with different sizes of labrets and the meaning behind each size. This is to show the audience in person how large these labrets can be so the audience can understand the process a little bit better.
